BASIC FUNCTION:
Routine but responsible semi-skilled to skilled manual work in the DPW Forestry Division including cutting and caring for trees, associated groundwork, chipping, hauling, other duties as assigned.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Under supervision, performs tasks involving skilled and unskilled manual labor in the care of trees and shrubs; assists with rigging rope systems; stump grinding; and application of tree care chemical solutions. Additionally performs tasks requiring an ordinary degree of skill of a laborer such as pick and shovel work required in digging and filling trenches; grading and loaming; cutting and mowing grass with hand or power mower and associated ground keeping tasks and to incidentally supervise the work of a group of (not more than 10) laborers engaged in tasks involving manual labor not requiring a high degree of skill; performs such tasks as may be assigned during snow removal operations. Heavy lifting is required.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Essential functions may require maintaining physical condition necessary for sitting, standing, and walking for extended periods of time; moderate to heavy lifting carrying which includes the ability to lift at least one hundred pounds; pulling, reaching, bending, climbing, and kneeling; use of fingers, both hands and legs required; must be able to distinguish colors and operate assigned vehicle.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Indoor and outdoor environments with wide range of weather conditions; exposure to vibrations and noise; work on slippery and uneven surfaces; work with electrical energy; work with and around heavy machinery; work in or near vehicle traffic; exposure to dust and fumes from motorized equipment; possible exposure to toxic chemicals; irregular working hours for inclement weather solutions and other circumstances.
LICENSES REQUIRED:
· High school diploma or equivalent
· State of Massachusetts CDL-8
